Dr. Antonia von Schöning is a scholar of media culture and a historian of science. She completed a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies at Bauhaus University Weimar in 2015, and earned a bi-national dipoma/maîtrise in Media, Culture, and Communication from Bauhaus University Weimar and Université Lumières Lyon II.
Antonia was acting professor for the History of Science at Humboldt University Berlin in 2024–2025. She has taught media theory, STS, and history of science as well as courses on art theory at Humboldt University Berlin, Bard College Berlin, University of Basel, FHNW Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel, and Bauhaus University Weimar. She held a fellowship at the German Historical Institute in Paris in 2025, and was affiliated researcher at the Center for Science, Technology, Medicine, and Society, UC Berkeley in 2020.
Antonia’s research interests span the history of creativity research, the history of digital humanities, art theory, and media ecologies.
Her recent research includes the project Clio rechnet, which investigates the history of quantitative historiography and the computing turn in history from the 1970s to the 1990s, focusing on both emerging infrastructures and debates around digital history.
Among her publications are the monograph Die Administration der Dinge. Technik und Imagination im Paris des 19. Jahrhunderts (2018)and several edited volumes such as Enzyklopädie der Genauigkeit(2021).
Antonia joined the SNSF research group «Self-Control: Race, Gender, and Social Science, 1950-today» in October 2025.
