African History Movie Night: Touki Bouk

We are hosting a film club, 'African History Movie Night,' once a month during the Autumn semester, at the History Department. We will show classic features from African cinema, produced during the 1960s and 1970s across the African continent. Everyone is invited, there will be snacks and all movies are provided with English subtitles.

Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambéty’s Touki Bouki was screened at the Cannes and Moscow film festivals in 1973. This is the story of two young people, Mory and Anta. “Like a Bonnie-and-Clyde duo, they zip like outlaws through the streets of Dakar on Mory’s moped, its handlebars emblazoned with zebu horns, desperately seeking some way out of the city.” (BBC Culture 2018).

Coordination: Max Hufschmidt, Kai Kersten-Kwame & Claire Nicolas.
