At the Department of History you can do a PhD in "History" or "Eastern European History". The doctoral subject History covers all epochs from the Middle Ages to Modern History.

Since the 1990s, the Department of History in Basel has made its mark internationally with research in cultural history, historical anthropology, and gender history, and has set geographical accents in Swiss history, the history of Eastern Europe, and the history of Africa. On this basis, the Department of History has defined two overarching research and teaching foci in recent years - "European History in Global Perspective" as well as "Renaissances" - which are further distinguished by a number of specific research orientations: History of Africa; Eastern European History; Images, Things, Media; Gender History; History of Knowledge; and Basel History.
