Doctoral researchers wishing to join the BGSH must be enrolled as doctoral researchers in History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Basel. Their first supervisor must be a BGSH faculty member. Researchers whose second supervisor is a BGSH faculty member may become associate members. In both cases, researchers must submit an application to be admitted.

BGSH members are permitted to complete a doctorate in History or in Eastern European History.

The BGSH doctoral program follows the faculty doctoral study regulations (fakultäre Promotionsordnung) dated 2 March 2017.

The doctoral program centers around independent thesis development. Throughout their doctorate, BGSH members also complete aspects of the curriculum to earn a total of 18 credit points (CP). According to the new rules of procedure dated 22 November 2018, these are as follows:

  • Participating in at least three research colloquiums within the BGSH
  • Participating in workshops and other doctoral events within the BGSH program (usually at least five)
  • Presenting on their dissertation project at least once in an academic forum
  • Organizing conferences, workshops, research groups etc.
  • Participating in other academic events within or outside the University of Basel
  • Participating in soft skills courses
  • Academically oriented internships

Doctoral researchers who joined the BGSH before 22 November 2018 are permitted to follow the old curriculum:

  • Participating in three research colloquiums at the Department of History (3 x 2 CP)
  • Presenting their dissertation project in an academic forum (2 CP)
  • Further tasks (10 CP)
    • Participating in conferences, workshops, colloquiums etc., with or without presenting a paper
    • Organizing conferences, workshops, research groups etc.
    • Participating in soft skills courses
    • Academically oriented internships
