African History Movie Night: Soleil Ô

We are hosting a film club, 'African History Movie Night,' once a month during the Autumn semester, at the History Department. We will show classic features from African cinema, produced during the 1960s and 1970s across the African continent. Everyone is invited, there will be snacks and all movies are provided with English subtitles.

In Soleil Ô, Mauritanian director Med Hondo follows a young African man’s journey as he moves to Paris. Between burlesque, autobiography, allegory and guerrilla theatre, “the movie is not only a bitter firsthand analysis of economic migration but also a similarly cutting critique of systemic white supremacy. Half a century has scarcely blunted — and may have even enhanced — its relevance.” (New York Times 2020).

Coordination: Max Hufschmidt, Kai Kersten-Kwame & Claire Nicolas.
