African History Movie Night: Baara

We are hosting a film club, 'African History Movie Night,' once a month during the Autumn semester, at the History Department. We will show classic features from African cinema, produced during the 1960s and 1970s across the African continent. Everyone is invited, there will be snacks and all movies are provided with English subtitles.

In Baara, Mailan director Souleymane Cissé portrays a young man leaving the countryside and being confronted to a violent social conflict. As he films class struggles, women’s emancipation, and social movements, this pessimistic movie deciphers the Malian military revolution’s shortcomings.
