Wie können Chatbots und Large Language Models (LLMs) Historiker:innen in der Forschung unterstützen? Im Herbstsemester 2025 bietet die Basel Graduate School of History eine Veranstaltung an, die sich der Anwendung von Chatbots und Large Language Models (LLMs) in der historischen Forschung widmet. Sorin Marti und Lea Kasper von RISE zeigen, wie LLMs entlang des Forschungsprozesses – etwa bei der Hypothesenbildung, Operationalisierung, Codierung und Erfassung von historischen Daten – sinnvoll genutzt und kritisch hinterfragt werden können.

Die Veranstaltung besteht aus zwei dreistündigen Einführungsblöcken, in denen die Grundlagen von Chatbots und LLMs vermittelt werden. Dabei wird anhand historischer Beispiele vermittelt, wie LLMs verantwortungsvoll in den Forschungsprozess integriert werden können. Im halbtägigen Workshop (Bring your own data!) bringen die Teilnehmenden eigene Quellen oder Materialien mit, um gemeinsam individuelle Strategien für den Einsatz von LLMs in ihren Projekten zu entwickeln.

Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Doktorierende der Geschichtswissenschaften, die ihr methodisches Repertoire im Bereich digitaler und KI-gestützter Forschung erweitern möchten. Bei Bedarf kann der Kurs in englischer Sprache angeboten werden. Fragen und Beiträge auf Englisch sind unabhängig von der Kurssprache natürlich jederzeit willkommen.

How can chatbots and large language models (LLMs) support historians in their research? In the fall semester of 2025, the Basel Graduate School of History will offer an event dedicated to the application of chatbots and large language models (LLMs) in historical research. Sorin Marti and Lea Kasper from RISE will demonstrate how LLMs can be effectively used and critically examined throughout the research process – for example, in hypothesis formation, operationalization, coding, and the collection of historical data.

The event consists of two three-hour introductory sessions in which the basics of chatbots and LLMs will be taught. Using historical examples, participants will learn how to responsibly integrate LLMs into the research process. In a half-day workshop ("Bring your own data!"), participants will bring their own sources or materials in order to collaboratively develop individual strategies for using LLMs in their projects.

The event is aimed at doctoral students in history who wish to expand their methodological repertoire in the field of digital and AI-supported research. If needed, the course can be offered in English. Questions and contributions in English are, of course, welcome at any time, regardless of the course language.
