The relationship between historical scholarship and the public is complicated. On the one hand, historians find themselves in an increasingly precarious position politically, economically and socially; on the other hand, public interest in historical research and knowledge transfer is growing – especially against the backdrop of current political and social conflicts.

The 2025 annual conference of the Basel Graduate School of History is dedicated to this relationship between history and the public. The conference consists of two conceptually interlinked days: an input day, during which experts share their experience in these fields in workshops and Q&A sessions, and a conference day, during which doctoral students can present practical or theoretical examples of working with and in the public sphere.
