Sara McDougall\, medieval historian with a focus on gender an d justice\, will give a workshop that focuses on the role that sex and gen der played in medieval justice and law\, and the stereotypes of medieval m isogyny that still prevail today. Ever since\, there has been a d emand for expertise on Ukraine\, with many more people wishing to go beyon d the headlines to familiarise themselves with Ukraine’s past and presen t. Thus\, the invasion gave an impetus for re-evaluating Ukraine as an aca demic subject\, pushing scholars working in area studies as well as East E uropean and Russian history\, cultural\, literary and social studies\, to reconsider how they teach and write the history of the region. \\r\\nDesp ite the relevance of Ukraine for the general public\, the academic communi ty\, and international affairs\, Ukraine still remains a lesser-known coun try. While there are a few scholarly monographs on Ukraine\, there is no r ecent comprehensive textbook on Ukrainian history that can be used in West ern universities and by the general public. To fill in this gap\, an impor tant scholarly project has been launched in 2024 – the first-ever handbo ok of Ukrainian history\, edited by Olena Palko (University of Basel)\, Fa bian Baumann (Heidelberg University)\, and Börries Kuzmany (University of Vienna)\, to be published in 2028. The handbook is under contract with Ox ford University Press\, the leader in academic publishing in the world.\\r \\nThis conference will become a milestone in this project\, bringing toge ther leading scholars in the field of modern European and Eastern Europea n history\, both from Western academic institutions and Ukraine\, who have agreed to contribute to this handbook survey of Ukrainian history. At Mon te Verità\, they will discuss their individual contributions and identify general patterns in history writing\, as well as the contours shaping our discipline in the future. From a historical perspective\, economic advantages an d disadvantages were often determined along ethnic lines. This changed wit h the onset of nationalism and the formation of nation-states\, where acce ss to power and economic resources started to be reserved for ethnic major ities\, crucially changing the status many ethnic economic elites had prev iously enjoyed. In the interwar period\, the governments of the new nation -states were eager to take over their countries not only politically and c ulturally\, but also with a focus on the economic sphere. This severely im pacted the former elites\, who were often members of ethnic minorities\, a s well as other ethnic groups\, especially Jews\, who\, while usually not belonging to the elites\, had previously still held crucial positions in t he economic sphere.\\r\\nThis conference seeks to explore the intricate dy namics of ethnicity and economic development in Eastern Europe. By focusin g on historical research with a special emphasis on the late imperial and the interwar period\, this event aims to shed light on how identification and differentiation based on ethnicity have shaped economic experiences an d outcomes in the region.
