Die Geschichte Afrikas wird am Historischen Seminar der Universität Basel seit 1989 als Lehrangebot im Bereich aussereuropäische Geschichte unterrichtet. Von 2001 bis 2008 finanzierte die Carl Schlettwein Stiftung eine Professur, deren Schwerpunkt auf dem südlichen Afrika liegt. Diese konnte im Sommer 2008 in eine Strukturprofessur des Historischen Seminars umgewandelt werden. Die Carl Schlettwein Stiftung finanziert seitdem eine Assistenzstelle (50%) am Lehrstuhl für Geschichte Afrikas.

Der Bereich Geschichte Afrikas beschäftigt sich mit der Vielfalt und Komplexität sozialer, kultureller, politischer und wirtschaftlicher Transformationsprozesse in Afrika und der afrikanischen Diaspora. Den regionalen Schwerpunkt bildet vor allem das südliche Afrika. Darüber hinaus sind aber auch West-, Zentral- und Ostafrika in Lehre und Forschung vertreten. Der zeitliche Fokus von Lehre und Forschung liegt auf dem 18. bis 21. Jahrhundert.

Der Lehrstuhl für Geschichte Afrikas ist Mitglied des Zentrums für Afrikastudien in Basel (ZASB) und des Kompetenzzentrums Afrika der Universität Basel. Er arbeitet eng mit den Basler Afrika Bibliographien (BAB), der mission 21 sowie anderen Lehrstühlen und Zentren der Universität Basel (wie dem Ethnologischen Seminar, den Gender Studies und dem Schweizer Tropeninstitut) zusammen. Internationale Kooperationen bestehen unter anderem mit der University of Cape Town, der University of the Western Cape, der University of the Witwatersrand und der University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Der Lehrstuhl Geschichte Afrikas organisiert regelmässig ein Forschungskolloquium zur Geschichte Afrikas: Programm.

The chair of African history is organising regularly a Research seminar in African history: programme.

The history of Africa has been taught since 1989 at the History department of the University of Basel. From 2001 to 2008, the Carl Schlettwein Foundation funded a professorship with a focus on Southern Africa. This was transformed into a structural professorship in the History department in summer 2008. Since then, the Carl Schlettwein Foundation has funded an Assistant position (50%) attached to the chair of African History.

The field of African History deals with the variety and complexity of social, cultural, political and economic transformation processes in Africa and the African Diaspora. African History considers the history of the whole continent from early times until the presence. The main regional focus of the chair of African history at the University of Basel is Southern Africa. But we also teach on West, Central and East Africa, as well as on the history of Algeria. The temporal focus in teaching and research covers the 18th to 21st century.

The chair of African history is a member of the Centre for African Studies in Basel (ZASB) and the Competence Centre on Africa at the University of Basel. We closely collaborate with the Basler Africa Bibliographien (BAB), Mission 21 as well as with other chairs and centres of the University of Basel (such as the Anthropology department, the Program on Gender Studies and the Swiss Tropical Institute). We have international exchange agreements with the University of Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape, the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
